Bentonville Council Vacancy Comes at a Key Moment for Growth Policy
Bentonville is accepting applications from Ward 1 residents to fill a City Council vacancy following the resignation of Council Member Gayatri Richardson, who represented Ward 1, Position 2. Residents interested in being considered for appointment are encouraged to apply by Monday, May 11, 2026, and the council is expected to vote at its Tuesday, May 12 public meeting. The city says the council will determine whether to appoint a qualified applicant to serve the remainder of the term, which ends in 2028, or call a special election in accordance with Arkansas law.
The timing makes the vacancy more notable because Bentonville is also entering a new phase of development policy. The city adopted the Bentonville Community Code on April 14, 2026, with the new code set to take effect May 14. That code combines zoning and land development regulations and is designed to align with the city’s Future Land Use Plan.
For residents and property owners, the larger story is not only who fills the seat, but how Bentonville continues to manage growth. City council members help make local governance decisions, participate in meetings and work sessions, and may serve on boards or committees as needed. With Bentonville’s new development framework beginning almost immediately after the vacancy process, the next Ward 1 representative could step into office during a consequential period for land use, infrastructure, and neighborhood planning.
